Fans Prompted 'PLL Summer School' to Walk Back Ezria Story Line

Following fan backlash, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School didn’t simply walk back their mentions of Ezria — they threw in a dig at Ezra as smartly.

During the Thursday, May 7, season premiere of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, Imogen (Bailee Madison) surprised viewers when she mentioned how her daughter’s adoptive parents were a gay couple who lived within the fictional Millwood town. The revelation came after Imogen in the past mentioned she chose Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra (Ian Harding), which served as an Easter egg to the unique Pretty Little Liars series, to elevate her baby.

Madison, 24, completely told Us Weekly that she wasn’t stunned by the decision.

“I understood what was once most probably coming. I feel that there used to be some hesitation via viewership after they found out that data,” Madison explained to Us. “So the object that [creators] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] and Lindsay [Calhoon Bring] and all people, I think check out to accomplish that smartly is to be as thoughtful and conscious against the topic issues that we’re dealing with. So I wasn’t shocked via that.”

While addressing the selection onscreen, PLL OG Dr. Sullivan (Annabeth Gish) pointed out that Imogen was motivated through wanting to reside near her daughter. Imogen, on the other hand, had a list of reasons — together with a dig about Ezra having a “weird vibe.”

“I used to be so happy that they were ready to write it in some way that’s still more or less a nod [to the show] and can make you chortle and make you snigger,” Madison noted to Us. “But I do suppose at the core for Imogen, she’s misplaced so many things in her life.”

The actress persisted: “The choice to surrender the child is the proper choice for her. She is aware of that however she’s simply misplaced one thing else. That’s really the thing she’s making an attempt to hang on to. It’s so unhappy. Really unhappy. She’s actually going thru it.”

Meanwhile, costar Zaria poked a laugh at how PLL: Summer School shook up the story line, adding, “My reaction to that is that mama knows easiest.”

Max’s Pretty Little Liars spinoff, which debuted in 2022, introduced a brand new iteration of the hit collection a couple of crew of girls who get taunted by an unknown stalker. While the first season was referred to as Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, season 2 was rebranded as Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Due to Aria and Ezra’s controversial teacher-student romance within the ABC Family-turned-Freeform collection, not every fan was thrilled to have them discussed within the current model.

“I felt like there used to be a weight that was once nearly taken off of me a bit bit just due to the truth that our first season had come out and fortunately were won so superbly,” Madison detailed to Us. “I think we all held so much respect for the unique and such a lot admire for what we were trying to do with our story and with these girls. So there used to be a degree of like, ‘OK, we’ve were given this.'”

Bring also weighed in on permitting the PLL legacy to shape their series.

“[Roberto and I] are both massive fans of the original display. So used to be our solid through the way — they are tremendous fans. So it was truly fun for us to come into one thing figuring out how rabid that fanbase is [and] figuring out how protecting the fans are [of] the original show,” she said during an interview with Us. “When a display gets it so right, you can’t simply retread those waters however instead [you'll be able to] be inspired by way of them.”

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is able to stand on its own partly on account of its slasher-style tone.

“While the original display unquestionably flirted with horror and slasher in some episodes, we concept, ‘Some way we might be in this international and give honor to the show is create new characters, have them up against identical odds and in reality lean in and embrace this as a horror genre,'” Bring concluded. “That was so amusing for us, given how much we love horror.”
