Martin's novel Fire & Blood, is expected to have fewer time jumps after the first season spanned more than a decade to give an explanation for how Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) began their family feud. The season 1 finale set the level for the civil warfare between Rhaenyra and half-brother Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) over the Iron Throne. The turning point, which took place in the ultimate episode, was the dying of Rhaenyra's son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault). Her son used to be killed all through a dragon fight with Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). "The moment that she receives the news of Luke's passing, that attempt at mediation crumbles," D'Arcy advised Entertainment Weekly in October 2022, referring to Rhaenyra’s various attempts to make peace along with her family. “I am excited to uncover what happens when Rhaenyra does less navigating and more performing on her instincts and desires."
