For six years, fans witnessed Kerry Washington’s Scandal persona Olivia Pope remedy the unimaginable. The ABC drama quickly modified the panorama of TV — even after it concluded in 2018 after 7 seasons.

Created through TV mogul Shonda Rhimes, Scandal follows Olivia Pope as she launches a disaster control firm. She left her place as White House communications director following her secret affair with President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn).

Jeff Perry (Cyrus Rutherford Beene), Bellamy Young (Melody Margaret Grant), Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins, née Lindsay Dwyer), Darby Stanchfield (Abby Whelan) and Guillermo Díaz (Huck, né Diego Muñoz) were a number of the show’s large cast.

Starring on Scandal allowed Washington to become a household identify. She earned two Emmy nominations in addition to one Golden Globe nod for the part.

“It used to be a in reality coveted position,” she recalled in July 2020 when the cast reunited for charity. “There hadn’t been a Black actress because the lead of a network drama in virtually forty years, so Shonda truly noticed each Black actress between the age of, like, 18 to seventy four at this level.”

The New York native persevered, “It used to be if truth be told this very robust second for Black ladies in Hollywood as a result of … we knew how particular this was. We knew that none folks had observed a role like this in our lifetime — and for us — and so there used to be really a sense of, like, ‘May the most productive girl win, and whoever will get it, we will be able to all have her again.’”

Similarly, Rhimes spoke about how Washington toplining a printed drama impacted TV going ahead.

“Now, it feels very commonplace and obtrusive that ladies of colour can lead displays. So hopefully that is one thing that Scandal has accomplished,” she said in a press conference in 2018, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Hopefully we’ve created an international wherein we’ve stopped seeing those characters on tv and it’s a mystical anomaly that they’re there and there’s an otherness to them … Hopefully we’ve made a dent in that.”

Despite the show’s success, the TV magnate has shut down all possibility that she would ever revisit the series after it ended. “Scandal is finished,” the Grey’s Anatomy author tweeted in 2018. “I love everybody and would work with everybody again in a heartbeat, but Scandal is done.”
