Warning: This story contains spoilers from the Wednesday, April 17, finale of The Magicians.

Didn’t see that coming? Neither did the cast of The Magicians. During the season 4 finale, Jason Ralph‘s Quentin Coldwater — who has led the collection since its debut in 2015 — sacrificed himself as a way to save everybody he cared about. Upon arriving within the Underworld, Penny-40 let him watch the funeral, of types, his pals were having — which included an unbelievable musical quantity and everybody announcing good-bye. (Cue the tissues!)

However, not one of the forged knew Ralph, 33, wouldn’t be returning to the sequence or that his persona was once useless … till this week.

“There was a dummy scene at the finish of the script that washed all of that away and found some way for Quentin to continue to exist,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly. “So, everybody — the workforce and [the solid] — was below the impression that’s what was if truth be told going to happen. They have been playing it like he died for real. They simply didn’t comprehend it was once going to be a perpetually decision.”

Ahead of season 4, coshowrunners John McNamara and Sera Gamble spoke with Ralph in regards to the concept of killing Quentin. After a dialog with the creator of the Magicians books, Lev Grossman, all of them agreed it used to be a good idea. So, Ralph used to be sworn to secrecy for roughly a yr.

“It definitely informed my alternatives throughout the season, and seeking to get Quentin to a place that would be cathartic and that we hadn’t left too many unfastened ends about who he is at its core,” the Broadway alum advised EW. “There’s a lot of plot stuff, but the journey of this individual needed to really feel complete. Having the heads up to kind of craft that was once in point of fact important, and I thank the [showrunners] for that.”

Fans of the collection know that simply because any individual dies, doesn’t mean they’re gone. However, Ralph might not be returning. The Younger alum has the option to return in a flashback but is probably not a chain regular again.

“It’s now not that Quentin’s tale is completed on The Magicians. It is that Jason Ralph is not a series common at the show, and Quentin Coldwater is useless at the show, and the story shifting forward is about the aftermath of that,” Gamble told The Hollywood Reporter. “Jason has left the display, and Quentin is dead, and a lot of season 5 is about what occurs next, just as when anyone dies in our lives, the next season of our existence is ready what occurs.”
