
Stay golden. Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze and extra transformed into ‘60s teenagers for Francis Ford Coppola’s large screen adaptation of The Outsiders.
The coming-of-age drama, in line with S. E. Hinton‘s classic novel of the same identify, hit theaters in March 1983 and helped to kickstart the careers of several of its stars. In explicit, Macchio gained rave opinions for his flip as Johnny Cade in the struggle of the Greasers and Socs.
“I learn the guide when I was 12 years outdated in seventh-grade English elegance. It was once the first book that I ever finished quilt to cover,” the Karate Kid actor informed Parade in 2017. “S.E. Hinton — like J.K. Rowling of lately — began numerous young youngsters studying in school. I was instantly attached to it.”
Macchio was interested in Johnny before even being cast in the venture. “I all the time felt [Johnny] sounded like I appeared,” he recalled. “Big pet canine eyes, darkish hair. He was once the runt. I was by no means the most important guy at school. But I didn’t come from his backstory via any stretch. … Johnny was a child whose mom used to be an alcoholic. His father was once abusive, and residential was the closing place he wanted to be. Those have been the demanding situations, however I embraced them.”
Lowe, for his part, seemed back on how Coppola became Hollywood’s Brat Pack into “mistaken aspect of the tracks guys,” sharing behind-the-scenes secrets and techniques with Kelly Clarkson in 2020. “[He] found a bunch of different actual greasers who were now grown-up adults and made us move spend the evening and reside with them,” the “Literally” podcast host mentioned on The Kelly Clarkson Show on the time. “They came to us at practice session and, like, ‘OK, so we’re gonna divide you up. Rob, Tom, you guys are gonna go stick with Bill and Sandy whoever.’ And we simply went to their little area and had dinner.”

The costars “ended up within the basement on two cots” — and neither of them were thrilled with the setup. “I imply, who vetted them? Really?” Lowe joked. “Do you think Francis Ford Coppola spent a lot of time vetting those people? I will inform you, he didn’t. He was [sitting] with an espresso and gazing some fancy Fellini movie and went, ‘Yeah, yeah that sounds great’ and went back to his espresso.”
