Tom Colicchio has been a mainstay of reality tv since Top Chef premiered in 2006 — but the Emmy-winning chef almost surrender TV utterly after his first onscreen revel in went awry.

“The first time I did TV I swore I might never do TV again,” Colicchio, 61, revealed to Us Weekly solely while promoting his new Spirits Network series, Tom Colicchio’s The Pantry.

“So it used to be [Live With] Regis and Kathie Lee and I had just gained Food & Wine mag Best New Chef. This is 1991,” he recalled. “They referred to as me and said, ‘Can you deliver a dish? We’ll move during the steps.’ And so I introduced this dish, it was braised crimson snapper, and then there used to be an eggplant caviar sandwiched between layers of fried eggplant [with] a sauce with roasted pink peppers, lemon, lemon zest [and] olive oil.”

Colicchio persevered: “I had my steps arrange and so I walked during the steps, and the manufacturer was like, ‘Great.’ So I’m leaving, and [I ask] these two stagehands, ‘Hey, what time should I come right here on Monday?’ [They stated] ‘Just get here at 8.’ I show up at 8 o’clock. The producer is screaming at me, ‘Where were you? You ignored rehearsal. You’re going to screw this up.’”

Unfortunately for Colicchio, lacking rehearsal wasn’t the one factor to move unsuitable that day.

“So they’re doing the show and I’m over there atmosphere the whole thing up, being very quiet, and every 10 mins he’d come by [pronouncing], ‘You’re going to clutter this up. I must pull this segment,’” he stated. “I’m getting nervous now, greater than sweaty, I’m freaking out.”

When they started the phase, Colicchio stated that the overdue Regis Philbin was “fumbling with the oven,” so he went over to check on the eggplant. When Philbin took the eggplant out of the oven, he quipped to Colicchio, “That’s what occurs while you pass over practice session.”

“I’m like, ‘I will’t consider this guy just threw me under the bus,’” Colicchio informed Us. “So I am getting throughout the segment and it’s best possible. We nail it. We absolutely nail it. And so a manufacturer comes over and says, ‘Oh, that used to be great!’ And I used to be like, ‘Why did [Regis] throw me underneath the bus like that?’ He goes, ‘No, he neglected practice session.’

Luckily for Top Chef fans, Colicchio did not let the incident deter him from pursuing a occupation on TV.

“It was once one of these bad enjoy,” he stated. “I walked off that set and I stated, ‘I will be able to never do TV again.’ And right here I'm, 21 seasons later of Top Chef, and I suppose I’m doing TV.”

Colicchio is expanding his truth cooking show chops together with his new interactive cooking show, The Pantry.
